Tama romaani sijoittuu Kiinassa 100- ja 200-luvuille, jolloin Kiinaa hallinnut Han-dynastia oli vahitellen rappeutumassa ja sortumassa. Valta oli tuolloin talonpoikaiskapinoiden ja palatsijuonitteluiden kautta siirtymassa Han-dynastian epapatevllta keisareilta paikallisille kunnianhimoisille sotapaallikoeille.
