1960 -ja 1970-luvulla Joensuu oli puutalovaltainen kaupunki, jossa kerrostaloja oli ainoastaan muutamia. Torin ymparilla oli Pankkitalo ja Siltakadun liikekerrostalot, mutta Koskikatua torin kohdalla reunustivat puutalot.

Taman jalkeen alkoivat puutalot vaihtua kerrostaloiksi, ja nykyaan Joensuu on vilkas, nykyaikainen Pohjois-Karjalan maakuntakeskus. Kaupungin keskustasta loeytyy kuitenkin viela joitain puutalokohteita, puistoja seka metsaisia nakymia.
