Neil Armstrong was an American astronaut who became the first person to walk on the moon. He was also an aerospace engineer, naval aviator, and pilot. Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was interested in flying from a young age and earned his pilot’s license when he was 16. He attended Purdue University on a scholarship from the US Navy, but left to become a test pilot after graduating in 1955.
Armstrong joined NASA’s astronaut program in 1962 and made his first flight into space aboard the Gemini 8 mission in 1966. On July 20, 1969, he famously became the first person to step onto the lunar surface. After retiring from NASA in 1971, Armstrong continued to work as a private consultant and public speaker. He died in 2012 at the age of 82.
