There is an ancient text in the Vedic tradition that goes by the name of Markandeya Purana. It gives various rituals and customs for family and society to observe and follow, to lead a happy and successful life. These customs are based on observing the life of real people, how they faced difficulties and overcame challenges and vagaries. Written by sage Markandeya (of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra fame) it consists of 137 chapters.
Its thirteen chapters from 81 to 93 consisting of 700 verses are called Devi Mahatmya, also as Chandi Path, which is today famous as the Durga Saptashati.
Within the Durga Saptashati, there are some verses known as the Devi Stuti or the Tantrokta Devi Sukta. Today it has become a custom to sing the Devi Stuti in a prayerful and soulful manner, that spreads cheer and brings great good fortune to the participants.
