Lawrence’s novel Sons and Lovers examines the emotional dynamics of the Morel family and charts the gradual decline of the middle son, Paul Morel, as he navigates tensions between his romantic life and his family life. The title of the novel is ambiguous and is significant because it provides two different readings to the story. The title can be understood as a reference to Gertrude’s sons and their respective lovers, or it can allude to Gertrude’s sons as her lovers.
