Women and their dimensions of thought have always been the mystery that almost every author has lamented over. In a male dominated world, the idea of women freedom of choice has always been the cause of turmoil in relationships and society at large. This wonderful book by Anne Bronte is largely a depiction of her own experiences as a governess and how she saw the women for all walks who came across in her course of life. The main character of the story, Agnes finds herself a job as a governess in wealthy household thinking that her financial independence would somehow relieve her of the miseries of life. She gets fired from her first job where is comes across unruly and rude children. In the second job as a governess, it comes as realization to her that it is the women at large who are oppressed in this male dominated society and each one is fighting a battle at some level or the other.
