Brice, a young lawyer from Boston who is passionate about Abraham Lincoln's cause. Eliphalet Hopper, a hard-working clerk, also plays a key role in the story as he seeks to advance himself financially and socially. As the war proceeds further, the romantic stress between the four main characters intensifies, and their loyalties and beliefs are put to the test.
