Llana of Gathol is a compilation of four novellas written by Edgar Rice Burroughs for Amazing Stories in 1941. Llana, the daughter of Gahan of Gothol and the granddaughter of John Carter. The book comprises four books, namely, The Ancient Dead (formerly The City of Mummies) which is followed by The Black Pirates of Barsoom, Escape on Mars, and Invisible Men of Mars. John Carter finds his granddaughter Llana of Gathol being kept hostage while looking for seclusion. Carter, Llana, and Pan Dan Chee, a young guy they pick up along the road, go on a series of adventures to safely return Llana to her home. They go with an old, crazy hypnotist who has been using hypnosis to keep people alive for almost a million years. They come upon a valley populated by Black Men who lock them up. They journey to Pankor, a place where troops remain frozen until a conflict is necessary. They eventually arrive at the country of Invak, whose citizens have perfected the skill of becoming invisible.
