First published in 1912 as part of J M Dent’s Modern Problems series. Holmes was a former Police Court Missionary and the author of Pictures and Problems from London Police Courts. With the proceeds from the sales of that book he set up a Home for Rest for London’s poorest workers, hoping that earnings from any future publications would go towards the maintenance and development of the Home.
