Fossey, J.M. (Ed.) Proceedings of the First International Congress on the Hellenic Diaspora from Antiquity to Modern Times. Montreal & Athens, 1988. 1991 The Hellenic Diaspora represents one of the oldest recorded and most continuous examples of a people who migrated from their country. The origins of this phenomenon date back to the fifth millenium B.C. By the Classical Period there were Hellenic communities established from the North coast of the Black Sea to North Africa, as far East as the Hindu Kush and as far West as the Iberian Peninsula. Today Hellenic communities are found over most of the world. Yet no attempt has so far been made to study the continuities and changes related to this phenomenon. It is the purpose of this international Congress to fill this gap. The proceedings of the Congress held in April 1988 in Montreal and Athens are contained in two volumes. The first contains papers relating to the period before the fall of Constantinople and the second those which cover the period of the Tourkokratia and bring the story down to the contemporary diaspora. Many aspects of the diaspora at all times are dealt with: political and economic history, institutions, cultural and social developments and the interplay between imported Hellenism and native cultures. MUMCAH 10 (1991), 2 vols. 839 p. 18x26 cm. Hb. - 179.00 EURO, ISBN: 905063060X
