This 5 volume set includes the complete critical edition by Dr M. Van der Valk of Eustathius’ commentary on the Iliad of Homer, composed between 1165 and 1175, as well as an index to the complete work. The Van der Valk edition traces the development of the text from its origins in Constantinople to its final redaction in Saloniki, carefully distinguishing the numerous additions made by Eustathius at various times to the margins of his own working manuscript. The variant readings he recorded - many of which were omitted by previous editors - have all been included. The editor also identifies and attributes many thousands of testimonia and parallel passages from the lexica and grammarians. The preface to volume I (i) considers the history of the text, the exemplar and the earlier editions, (ii) examines Eustathius’ sources and the use he makes of them as a commentator, (iii) discusses his language and style and (iv) explains the methodology of the edition. The preface to volume II offers corrections and emendations to the earlier preface, examines the orthography of the exemplar and provides indexes of technical terms and words discussed by the editor in his apparatus, indexes which are further expanded in prefaces to volumes III and IV. This set also includes the Index to the four volumes of the critical edition, composed by Helena Maria Keizer.
