The nine studies in this volume trace the encounters and competition in the Eastern Mediterranean between the two great trading nations, their respective commercial achievements, attempts to follow a common policy under William III, the organization and managment of their trade, but also bring out the role of the Ottoman world in the every day existence of Western merchants, Ottoman regulations, the participation of Ottoman subjects in European trade and the part played by local staff in running consulates.
