The North-Western Semitic epigraphic provides a valuable contribution to the understanding of the Old Testament and of the Ugaritic texts and to the knowledge of the North-Western Semitic languages as such. This dictionary in two volumes is concerned with the North-Western Semitic material found in inscriptions, papyri and ostraca in Phoenician, Punic, Hebrew, various forms of Aramaic, Ammonite, Edomite, the language of Deir Alla and more. It is a translated, updated and augmented edition of Jean and Hoftijzer’s Dictionnaire des Inscriptions Semitique de l'Ouest . The material covers the period from approximately 1000 BC to around 300 AD. Besides translations, the entries in the text include discussions and full references to scholarly literature.
