Eleazar of Worms (1176-1238) was also known as Eleazar Rokeach, or Eleazar ben Judah ben Kalonymus. He was an ashkenazi kabbalist and belonged to a group of Jewish pietists. His Commentary on the Book of Formation (Sefer Yetzirah) is one of the best known and referenced texts dealing with the formation of a Golem - a living being created from inanimate matter. Eleazar gives an extensive explanation of the correct permutations and their sequences, and also explains the most important holy Names. His bright interpretation of the Book of Formation opens up new worlds of understanding, leading the reader into the practices that allow us to emulate God’s Creation, but also to understand what we are and where we are. The text is a part of The Secrets of Raziel (Sodei Razya), of which different versions exist. Eleazar’s is thought to be the most complete. It contains extracts from Shabathai Donnolo’s own commentary. The first complete edition was printed only at Przemysl in 1889
