Poiche gli italiani non riuscivano a fermare il salasso di affondamento delle loro navi con i rifornimenti, situazione che con l'intervento di navi di superficie dislocate a Malta divenne drammatica, Berlino decise di correre in aiuto dell'Alleato mediterraneo con i suoi sommergibili che, nel periodo ottobre 1941-gennaio 1942, ristabilirono la situazione strategica.
