Il libro narra le vicende militari della SS Polizei-Division. Trattata inizialmente come una formazione di secondo livello, fu equipaggiata ed armata approssimativamente, cosi come fu impiegata in prima linea sempre come forza di riserva, soprattutto nella campagna sul fronte occidentale nel 1940. Tuttavia, come accadra spesso nella storia delle Waffen SS, anche per la Polizei la prova del fuoco servira a farla diventare una formazione di elite grazie soprattutto all'esemplare comportamento dei suoi reparti e dei suoi comandanti sul campo di battaglia, e nel febbraio del 1942 finalmente fu trasformata in una vera e propria formazione SS, diventando la SS-Polizei-Division.
