The source of the doctrine of justification is a much-debated topic within Pauline studies. After a brief review of some of the main sources of this doctrine, the author comes out in favour of Paul’s Old Testament background, asserting that the creation-covenant scheme in the Pentateuch provides the apostle with his theological foundation in the letter to the Romans. The thesis studies the themes of creation and covenant in Genesis, Exodus and Deuteronomy. On the basis of the study of Rom 9-11, it presents the relationship between God’s sovereignty and human disobedience as the reality shaping the course of the history of salvation. The notion of God’s covenant gives a unified vision to how justification by faith conveys the biblical idea concerning creation’s dependence for its redemption.
