Giulio Prunai (1906-2002) was a lieutenant in the Italian Navy during World War II. Captured in Toulon on 8th September 1943, he spent two years in Nazi concentration camps in Germany and Poland. He finally got back to his home in Siena on 5th September 1945. His prison diary, written with makeshift means and kept secret from the jailers for the duration of internment, traces a very clear and detailed fresco of life in concentration camps: a daily history of hunger, cold, forced labor, violence, and war crimes.
