Nel 1500 tutti erano in guerra contro tutti. Sul mare si scontravano le navi delle grandi Potenze di allora, Spagna, Francia, Genova e Venezia ma chi davvero dominava il Mediterraneo erano le flottiglie Barbaresche. Pirati senza paura, che spesso partivano dal nulla, costruivano regni e amministravano grandi ricchezze. Vivevano nel lusso che si guadagnavano col saccheggi delle coste cristiane o abbordando navi spagnole o qualsiasi naviglio capitasse loro a tiro e dal commercio degli schiavi. L'ombra dell'Impero Ottomano, che si protendeva verso Ovest, li proteggeva. A volte capitava di finire catturati da questi pirati ma, partendo dalla condizione ultima dell'essere umano, senza liberta, servo di un padrone che ti possiede come si possiede un oggetto, si puo trovare riscatto. Da schiavo, sotto le bandiere Ottomane, nel 1500 si poteva anche diventare Re. Bastava esserne capaci.
