The Good Old Rulers as Exemplars

G K Egelund

QUALITY OF LIFE IN OUR TIME Today we see turbulence in the world; we can see that our ability to live naturalLy has been in decay for a long time. Within in few years we have seen upheavals that no-one would have imagined could take place even across several generations. THE GOOD OLD LEADERS AS MODELS At such a point in time we must remember that basic leadership ‘secrets’ are the same today as they were in ancient times. There are 5 main types of leaders and their basic nature can most clearly be seen if we return and look at them in their original form in the indigenous communities. Here is an unusual example:

‘It is further said about the 'mythical’ Danish King Rolf that whatever you asked him for, he had a habit of immediately granting it, with an eager generosity, at the first occasion, so that no-one ever was pressed to ask a second time. This because, he would rather pre-empt the repetition of the request by immediately granting it, than lowering the value of the gift by letting it wait. This is also why a multitude of warriors flocked to him, for bravery is encouraged by praise and nurtured by gifts.‘

So, we will look at different leader archetypes, as they have found their expression in different societies across the globe, societies which have emerged completely spontaneously through thousands of years of evolution. From the smallest units, through the tribes, chiefdoms and kingdoms and on to the greatest cultures, we will extract some timeless codes for use in daily life in our own time.

'THE AGE OF ELBOWS’ A great part of our history our forefathers spent as hunter-gatherers. They had to walk after food, on their feet. Simply put, this was the Age of the Feet. Agriculture or the Age of the Hands followed and much later the Age of Elbows, that is, industrialization with all its social mobility, stress and ambition. Fairly recently, we entered the Age of the Head when computers arrived. - What will come next? The Age of the Hearth?

As we moved up in this way, 5 ways of life emerged. Each society had its own grand leader archetype. Even to this day we find the same 5 types high and low in our social life. We have leaders at different levels. From heads of a family to CEO’s to leaders of countries, different characteristics are required.

PAPER’S POWER OVER PEOPLE The huge technological advances of recent centuries, might give you the impression that all development has been progressive, because we are so much ‘wiser’, and know so much more. Yet an area, in which we can observe that we have regressed, is in our ability to live in a natural way.

It happens far too often these days: A new system or beaucratic reform, which was supposed to make things work much better, is implemented. When the results more often than not, do not lead to the expected results some new rules on paper are enforced, which turns out not to be ideal either. The same pattern repeats itself again and again.

A NEW DISCOVERY OF BALANCE The reader will be lead to a amazing discovery: That is, a new connection between five kinds of old societies that worked in a harmonious way - and some modern power systems which are stressed out of balance.
