Torsdag den 12. november 1840 foretog den 27-arige Soren Kierkegaard som saedvanlig en gatur i Kobenhavns gader. Undervejs slog han et smut omkring Borsen, hvor han i Schubothes boghandel kobte en splinterny roman i to bind skrevet af Carl Bernhard. Gamle Minder lod dens lovende titel. Efter kobet ilede Kierkegaard hjem til sin lejlighed pa Norregade, hvor han i de folgende dage slugte den ekstremt underholdende bog, der foregar i Struensee-arene og handler om lidenskab og troskab. Ja, han blev sa begejstret for vaerket, at han onsdag den 18. november foraerede det til sin forlovede den 18-arige Regine Olsen. Hvorfor ville Kierkegaard for enhver pris have netop hende til at laese Bernhards roman? Hvilken rolle kom Gamle Minder i det hele taget til at spille i den verdensberomte love story, der udspillede sig for knap 200 ar siden bag voldene i Kongens Kobenhavn?
