Efter fremlaeggelsen af Den Augsburgske Bekendelse i 1530 forelaeste Luther over Galaterbrevet. I foraret 1532 valgte Luther dernaest at gennemga tre udvalgte Salmer, nemlig Salme 2, 51 og 45. I disse Salmer gennemarbejder Luther atter de centrale temaer i den reformatoriske teologi i en om muligt endnu mere finpudset og klar udgave. Luther fremsaetter heri sin hovedtese: Teologiens egentlige genstand er det syndige menneske, der er skyldig og fortabt, og den retfaerdiggorende Gud, der er det syndige menneskes frelser. Luthers forelaesning over Salme 51 foregik pa latin. Den udkom i bogform i 1538 og ogsa oversat til tysk 1539. Den oprindelige latinske tekst har flere spaendende teologiske udtryk og emner, som den tyske oversaettelse ikke har med, sa derfor folger oversaettelse her den originale latinske tekst, som findes i WA 40 II, 315-470.
