Jose Cadalso nacio en Gibraltar y estudio en los jesuitas de Cadiz y despues en Paris. Fue cadete en el regimiento de caballeria de Borbon y alcanzo el grado de coronel. Vivio en varias ciudades espanolas, entre ellas Madrid, donde tuvo amores apasionados con la actriz Maria Ignacia Ibanez. Fue amigo de Nicolas Fernandez de Moratin y de Tomas de Iriarte. Sus memorias reflejan su intensa vida.
