Los biografos no se ponen de acuerdo sobre las fechas de su nacimiento y muerte, parece que vivio entre 1510 y 1560. Nacio en Sevilla y estudio en la Universidad de Alcala. Fue uno de los principales cronistas de la conquista espanola de America; enseno lenguas clasicas en la Universidad de Alcala y despues se hizo sacerdote y fue secretario y capellan de Hernan Cortes. Aunque Francisco Lopez de Gomara nunca fue a America, la historia de la conquista le fue contada por el propio Cortes y otros expedicionarios.
