A los doce anos Juana Borrero era una excelente versificadora y pintaba. El poeta Julian del Casal la conoce y le dedica el poema Virgen triste, versos premonitorios de su muerte prematura. La perdida de Casal la sume en el dolor, que mitiga cuando conoce a Carlos Pio Urbach a quien escribe estas cartas. Carlos Pio, comprometido con la independencia de Cuba, se fue a Cuba. Se despidieron en 1895 cuando ella marcho con su familia para Cayo Hueso y nunca mas se volvieron a ver.
