En la mitologia griega, Narciso es un hermoso joven, hijo del dios del rio Cefiso y de la ninfa Liriope. Al nacer, sus padres consultaron al adivino Tiresias que dio el siguiente veredicto: Vivira hasta viejo si no se contempla a si mismo . Todos se enamoraban de Narciso, pero el los rechazaba. Entre las jovenes prendadas por el estaba la ninfa Eco, quien habia disgustado a Hera y habia condenada por esta a repetir las ultimas palabras de lo que se le dijera. Eco en consecuencia no podia hablarle a Narciso de su amor.
