Hacia 1270, la Cronica General de Alfonso X el Sabio alude por primera vez a un episodio de la vida de Alfonso VIII (1155-1214): en 1170, recien casado con Leonor de Aquitania, se enamoro de una judia de Toledo, Raquel, la Fermosa , y se encerro con ella durante casi siete anos olvidando a su legitima mujer y su reino. Los nobles de la Corte decidieron matar a la judia. Este argumento ha sido tratado entre otros por Lorenzo de Sepulveda en la Romanza (1551), Mira de Amescua, Luis de Ulloa y Pereyra, Juan Bautista Diamante y Garcia de la Huerta (1772).
