Cervantes participo en varias expediciones militares, de regreso a Espana fue apresado por piratas berberiscos. Durante cinco anos sufrio un duro cautiverio en Argel. Arriesgo su vida en varios intentos de evasion hasta que fue rescatado por unos frailes trinitarios cuando era conducido a Constantinopla. Tenia treinta y tres anos. Al final de su vida publico Ocho comedias y ocho entremeses nuevos, nunca representados (1615). Tres de esas comedias muestran su imagen del mundo islamico y su vida en Argelia: El gallardo espanol, Los banos de Argel y La gran sultana.
