La campana del Maestrazgo is the fifth novel of the third series of Episodios Nacionales by Benito Perez Galdos. The Carlist war continues as we find ourselves in the Basque regions with an aristocratic narrator. Our wealthy and wise narrator faces capture by General Cabrera’s troops, allowing a window into the cruelties of war and mass executions of the time. As usual, the author incorporates a romantic tale as well.
