ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The long-awaited new novel by Mathias Enard, winner of the 2015 Goncourt Prize, is a splendid tribute to nature and the customs of rural life.

An anthropology student, immersed in his studies of country life in the 21st century, settles in a fictional town on the Poitou marsh to observe the customs of its picturesque residents. In all parts of the world death always catches up with the living, however, in this area of northwestern France death offers a three-day truce every year, respecting the traditional banquet held annually by the Brotherhood of the Gravediggers. Enard returns to his native France with a novel that flows and turns like the wheels of life; it pulls the threads of the story and its multiple characters in a narrative spider web where different times, spaces, and living beings -that inhabit or once inhabited the place- converge.
