Raphael Montanez Ortiz is the first monograph dedicated to the life and work of the iconic artist.This publication edited by Javier Rivero Ramos features an interview with artist Pedro Reyes, new essays by Kevin Hatch and Chon Noriega, together with a revised CV and exhibition history by Ana Perry. This milestone project published by El Museo del Barrio is also comprised by archival material drawn from the personal archive of the artist as well as the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center. It contains more than two hundred colour images as well as a wealth of primary documents and previously unpublished texts by the artist. Raphael Montanez Ortiz (Brooklyn, New York, 1934) is an artist, educator and Founder of El Museo del Barrio in NYC. The book covers Raphael’s visual universe in a very careful edition and a magnificent design by the award-winning designer MariCris Herrera. The book covers the Destruction in Arts Symposium (DIAS) the art Symposium that happened in 1966 in London with Yoko Ono Wolf Vostell, Peter Weibel and Al Hansen led by Gustav Metzger where Montanez Ortiz performed a series of seven public destructions events.
