A unique chance to rediscover Franco’s photographer.
Although Campua was the usual photographer of Franco and the Spanish royal family during the dictatorship, to limit any definition of Campua to the title of Franco’s photographer means falling prey to reductionism. The vantage point offered by this book allows us to delve deeper into the photographer’s work and discover him as a multifaceted figure. It offers us the chance to overcome stereotypes, expand our viewpoint and see the portrait created as an entire society walked in front of the camera held by this great master of 20th-century Spanish photography. This new book is part of the PHotoBolsillo series, which publishes monographs on the most important Spanish, Latin American and African photographers. AUTHOR: Jose Demaria Vazquez (Madrid, 1900-1975), best known as Campua, was a photojournalist as well as a theatre and cinema entrepreneur. He collaborated with important media at the time, such as Mundo Grafico, La Esfera and Nuevo Mundo; he covered the war in Africa, as well as numerous daily news and events, from motor-races to tram accidents. In 1922 he was the only photographer accompanying king Alfonso XIII during his famous trip to Las Hurdes, and during the Spanish civil war, he joined the Nationalists and took countless photographs both at the front and rearguard. He also photographed innumerable celebrities, artists and politicians, including Truman Capote and Gregory Peck, among many others. 65 images
