No other Mexican writer is so widely acclaimed as Rulfo, who was born in the state of Jalisco in 1917 and died in Mexico City in 1986. Numerous writers –of the stature of Gabriel Garc.a M.rquez, Jorge Luis Borges, and Susan Sontag– have testified to the fact. Juan Rulfo also devoted himself to photography during the years he was producing his narrative works, and numerous critical books have dealt with this facet of his oeuvre. Susan Sontag, author of the classic On Photography, said that Rulfo was the finest photographer she had come across in Latin America.
