East to West. Saigon to Montreal. It is M n’s journey, a young refugee whose mother is protecting her by setting up a marriage to a Vietnamese restaurant owner in Canada. M n has learned to grow up without dreaming and to live without needing hardly anything. But in the kitchen, when she reworks the simple recipes of her childhood, her emotions are unleashed. Tomato juice reminds her of the suffering in her village, a dessert showing the divide in culture, and cutting peppers says a lot about the art of seduction. In a subtle swing between past and present, Kim Th y draws a beautiful mosaic in which the mix of memory, love, and estrangement causes us to realize how far we’ve come.

Pero en la cocina, cuando reinterpreta las sencillas recetas de su infancia, las emociones se desatan: el jugo del tomate recuerda el sufrimiento de un pueblo, un postre acerca dos culturas distintas, el modo tradicional de cortar un pimiento tiene mucho que decir sobre el arte de la seducci n.
