In May 1968, while French young people were taking to the streets, three Latin American artists were exhibiting at the Musee d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris: Wifredo Lam, Roberto Matta, and a woman, the sculptor Alicia Penalba. Born in Argentina, having begun her career in France in the 1950s, Penalba was at the height of her powers at that moment. Her totems and winged sculptures were sought after by museums and private collection in Europe and the United States, while her monumental works graced public spaces in France, Switzerland, Germany, and elsewhere. This volume, published by RM under a joint imprint with the Archivo Alicia Penalba and the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA), draws on the artist’s personal archive, which contains a wide variety of documents and a magnificent collection of photographs. Lavishly illustrated, the book includes essays on Penalba by both Argentine and European scholars. It has been published on the occasion of a selective exhibition of the artist’s work at the MALBA. Bilingial Edition (English / Spanish) 95 photographs
