Set in a small town in Germany at the end of the 19th Century, sisters Johanna, Ruth, and Marie Steinmann are left completely unprotected after the death of their father. They cannot take over his glassblowing business because it is not open to women. They are forced to seek employment elsewhere until they meet an American businessman who offers them liberty and freedom.
