This book deals with AkademGorodok (Academic City), the principal educational and scientific center of Siberia, founded in 1958 by the Soviet Academy of Science. The physicist and mathematician Mikhail Lavrentyev played an important role in the establishment of the center, which at its height was home to 65,000 scientists and their families. This book by Mexican photographer Pablo Ortiz Monasterio (born 1952) reveals the lab’s secret interiors. Gersh Budker was the first director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics and made several contributions to modern physics in the area of particle acceleration and electron-positron colliders. The institute, now known as the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics, was for decades a pioneer in its field. It is still today an important center of scientific research and a part of AkademGorodok. 50 photographs
