Cuban musician, Ernesto, prefers a quiet life, but trouble follows him everywhere. After witnessing a Mafia murder, he fears for his life and flees to Spain where he discovers a subdued community oppressed by Franco's brutal regime. Yet beneath their veneer of respectability lies a flourishing resistance network which Ernesto is invited to join.

Haunted by the errors of his past and yearning for his native Cuba, he rejects their political subterfuge in favour of life on the side-lines, playing his beloved trombone and dreaming of Belle, the lover he left behind in Havana.

But when a lonely boy enters his life, everything changes.

Reluctantly he agrees to hide a bundle of letters from the authorities, and as he opens them, one by one, he is drawn further into the rebels' cause, and his newly formed relationship with the boy is put to the test, until finally he has to act.
