This is a contemporary account of Fridtjof Nansen’s early life and endeavors. It takes us through Nansen’s boyhood and formative years, all the way up to the famous North Pole expedition on his ship Fram. It is written in an engaging and accessible style for young people.

Fridtjof Nansen was one of the greatest polar explorers of the late 19th and early 20th century, and a folk hero to the Norwegian people. In 1896 he won international renown upon returning from his polar expedition. Soon afterwards in 1905 Nansen became a champion of Norwegian independence; he drew heavily on his prestige to secure international support for this cause. Towards the end of his life he became responsible for organizing humanitarian aid, contributing significantly towards saving millions of people from starvation in the 1920s.

This book focuses on the first half of Nansen’s life up until his return from the polar expedition. It portrays the development of personal qualities and the trials of an extraordinary character.

We join Nansen on a journey of incredible hardships and overcoming insurmountable odds through diligence, determination, impeccable leadership and comradery. On his polar expeditions he and his crew faced lethal dangers many times as they braved the harsh elements of the far north. Fridtjof Nansen is an exemplar of the highest order and his deeds may serve as a source of inspiration for generations to come.

Author Jacob B. Bull, translated by Barnard, M. R. (Mordaunt Roger)
