Krishna, hated from before his birth by his adversaries, the child grew in disguise among the cowherds to become the uncrowned king of his clan and a major figure in the politics of ancient India. Although Krishna appears as the key figure shaping the course of events in Mahabharat, there is very little about his personal life in the epic itself. His childhood and life before and after the Mahabharat are covered in an appendix to the main epic, The Harivansh. This sequel to The Adventures of the Pandav Princes narrates the story of his life. However, it is written in such a manner that it can be read as a readalone too. Retold for modern readers from the East as well as the West the story from one of the world's oldest and longest epic abounds in a wealth of multi-faceted characters and variegated world-views. This INDIAN EDITION differs from the WORLD EDITION in only one respect-the names used in this version are the original names as they appear in The Mahabharat, while the World Edition has the long and difficult names abbreviated for the benefit of readers from the Occident. Otherwise the contents of both editions are the same.
