Der Roman erzahlt die Lebensgeschichte von Jane Eyre, die nach einer schweren Kindheit eine Stelle als Gouvernante annimmt und sich in ihren Arbeitgeber verliebt, jedoch immer wieder um ihre Freiheit und Selbstbestimmung kampfen muss. Der Stoff des Romanes wurde haufig fur Theater, Film und Fernsehen bearbeitet.
