Die Handlung beginnt, als die 16-jahrige Mademoiselle de Chartres mit ihrer jung verwitweten Mutter, der hochadeligen und reichen, aber sittenstrengen Madame de Chartres, aus der Provinz nach Paris kommt, wo sie zwecks Partnersuche fur sie am Hof eingefuhrt werden soll. Gleich der erste Mann, dem sie, noch vorher in einem Juweliergeschaft, begegnet, der Prinz von Cleves, verliebt sich in sie, noch ohne zu wissen, wer das schoene junge Madchen sein koennte.
