Green IT as an essential tool for controlling the pollution and environmental damage caused by the IT sector presents the excessive increase in hardware consumption for the IT sector, which has constantly damaged the environment. The high cost of electricity and the continuous replacement of IT materials is one of the main problems for nature, as it contaminates the soil through the improper disposal of highly toxic components. In Brazil, there is still no standard or law that regulates all IT processes, including their interaction with the environment. This research looks at the concept of Green IT based on the article by the Gartner Institute, called Green IT: a new industry shock wave by Simon Mingay (2007), which will analyse its three factors: its policies and legislation, information and organisational strategies and ReDesign, ReUse, ReCycle, comprising its main certifications and seals. Finally, the European Union's legislation REACH - Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals, the European Parliament's RoHS directive and the Cap and Trade environmental policy.
