This study examines the role of social media in enhancing student engagement and gratification among university students in Africa. It shows how platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp facilitate academic collaboration and foster continuous interaction between peers and instructors, enriching the educational experience. Utilizing the Uses and Gratification Theory, research shows that students actively engage with social media for academic purposes, particularly in Nigeria. However, while social media enhances connectivity and campus involvement, it also poses distractions during classroom activities. The findings indicate the need for a balanced approach to integrating social media into higher education, maximizing its benefits while addressing potential drawbacks.
