Feminist Discourse in Cameroonian Films

Ngam Paul Go-Oh

This study examines the woman's struggle for her freedom and emancipation in a society that is highly patriarchal. It shows how two movie directors of opposite gender; Francoise Ellong and Victor Viyuoh in their movies expose the problems affecting the female gender in the conjugal and non-conjugal sphere of the rural and urban spectrum in Cameroon. The work utilizes, the feminist theory with its tenets of Marxist feminism, psychoanalytic feminism, and ecofeminism to explain the phenomenon understudy. Through observation, interviews, library research, and internet publications, the qualitative enquiry reveals some findings on the situation of the woman in Cameroonians films. The women in the films understudy have adopt rebellious attitudes that expose the limitations of patriarchy and its norms. The study reveals how the actions of the characters are undertaken as strife for survival from a system that disfavors them. Women in these movies are portrayed as victims of a system that denigrates them to subservient positions. The women in the films undertake resistance in a move to relief themselves of the stigma placed by culture.
