NDT techniques for detecting flaws in plates in naval structures

Gabriel Pereira de Macedo, Carlos Alberto

This paper presents X-ray, Liquid Penetrant and Ultrasound tests carried out at the Vard Niteroi S.A. Shipyard in conjunction with PW END and SPERJ, companies specialized and certified to carry out these tests, with the aim of verifying the effectiveness of a procedure that employs equipment commonly used in conventional inspection to detect and locate discontinuities in welds in carbon steel plates and pipelines. Non-destructive testing is one of the main product quality control tools and is widely used in the oil, petrochemical and shipbuilding industries, among others. Their main characteristics are to prioritize the quality of goods and services, reduce costs, preserve the environment and they are the main competitive factor among the companies that use them. The test methods carried out are capable of providing information about the defect content of a given product, the characteristics of a material, which can reveal and monitor the degradation of components, equipment and structures. This shows that we can use simple, low-investment procedures.
