Local hemostatic agents are useful in the management of post-operative bleeding in oral surgery patients with congenital hematologic disorders. Local hemostatic agents are beneficial in controlling bleeding during oral surgical procedures in patients with congenital and acquired bleeding disorders and also in patients who are on antithrombotic `medications for their systemic conditions. No current hemostatic agents meet all the requirements. There are continuous efforts to develop new hemostatic agents with various delivery mechanisms for treating severe hemorrhage. These include self-propelling particles, hydrophobically modified chitosan gauze, injectable and in situ forming gels, and self-expanding foams. Given the safety concerns with some currently used hemostatic materials, more efficient and safer hemostatic agents are still needed.
