Application of the Minimum Amount of Lubrication in Abrasion Machining

Jose Claudio Lopes, Bruno Kenta Sato, Tiago Da Silva

The minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) technique has emerged as an alternative to the use of conventional coolant lubrication, as the application of atomized lubricant at high pressure reduces the amount of cutting fluid required for machining. Several studies have aimed to improve the technique when using it in abrasive machining, as it has been noted that MQL is deficient in removing chips, causing the phenomenon of caking, which impairs the efficiency of the process, so mechanisms that can clean the cutting surface of the wheel are of paramount importance. The aim of this study is to catalog alternatives for cleaning, using a device to insert rectangular sticks of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), Aluminum Oxide and Silicon Carbide into the cutting surface of the CBN grinding wheel. In this way, the behavior of this cleaning tool on the surface quality of the ground parts could be analyzed according to different output variables.
