Mariana Pineda is a popular character that had great literary repercussions after her death in 1836, since she was considered the icon of freedom. Many authors recreated the life and death of the heroine. Federico Garcia Lorca produced a play based on historical and fictional facts about Mariana: Romance popular en tres estampas (1925). The theatrical work was constructed from popular material of oral transmission and literary material that emerged since 1836; thus a new writing was created by mixing the popular material and the poet's cult material.
