The choice of narratives for this book is based on the ongoing discussion about the value of historical narratives that deal with Germany under the Nazi dictatorship. Indeed, this study wishes to contribute to the project of establishing several canonical narratives that should be studied to gain an in-depth understanding of the mechanism and features of totalitarian systems. What this book wants to achieve is to disclose the hidden motives of the characters discussed in detail, their inner struggles and secret longings under a system that influenced their decisions and fate in all aspects of their life. Personalized, fictional accounts of the past can give their readers insight into the mindset of their characters that go beyond any purely historical account. They can trace and go over personal biographies in all their intimate details. They allow their readers to develop an in-depth understanding of the effects of a totalitarian system in all its aspects.
